The Lodge today
Every lodge has its own unique characteristics that set it apart, Ashwell certainly has.
• Ashwell Lodge has its own ritual adapted from Nigerian workings this makes us a little different from many other Lodges.
• The Lodge uses the complete version of the Working Tools and the investment of the Aprons.
• The Lodge has a vibrant Festive Board.
• We have and continue to realign ourselves with our founding members village by rekindling our relationship with Ashwell.
• We have a remembrance book, identifying past members who have passed to the Grand Lodge above. Names are randomly remembered by our Chaplain at each Lodge meeting.
Hospitality is a cornerstone of Freemasonry, fostering a sense of belonging and community among brethren. Ashwell Lodge is very keen to provide hospitality events throughout the year. Our regular annual events include a Lodge Supper and a Ladies Festival.
• Our informal supper (usually in November) is where we organise a 3-course meal with an entertainer on a Saturday night. We raise money at this event with a raffle and any profits on the night will also go to the chosen charity. It is planned to continue with this event going forward and it will also provide us with an opportunity to recruit new members.
• Our Ladies Festival recognises the support of our Ladies in a more formal event with a 3-course meal. It includes a gift for our Ladies and a band for entertainment. We usually play some games and hold a raffle to raise extra funds for our chosen charity. It is also planned to continue with this event going forward and it will again provide an opportunity to recruit new members.
• Over the years, we have held various other events including Burns Night Suppers with a piper and entertainment, A Valentines party, Garden Party BBQ’s and Curry Nights at local restaurants.
Our history
Ashwell Lodge, was formed on 2nd May 1963 because its Mother Lodge was becoming too large. Four of the founder members were from Ashwell in Hertfordshire and that is why it is named after the village
In the community
An approach has been made to Ashwell Village in North Hertfordshire, our namesake village. Over the last two years the Lodge has donated funds to the local primary school and there are now plans to involve the Lodge in regular village events both with attendance and charitable support. The Lodge has engaged with the Parish Council to ask for their support with local groups and to see if the Lodge can have an entry in the village yearbook. There is an annual festival which we plan to attend with a stall. It is also planned to attend a regular quiz night in one of Ashwell’s Pubs, the Rose and Crown.
The Lodge also sponsors the Ashlar Award at the Royal Masonic School for Girls and we invite their staff to our events from time to time.
Ashwell Lodge has built a relationship with the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Hospital Trust and have, over a number of years, donated funds to the Mens’ Health and Cardiology units at Hospitals covering Lister in Stevenage, QE2 in Welwyn Garden City, Hertford County and Mount Vernon. The representatives from the Charity have joined us, as guests, at events and have put entries of thanks in their magazine.
