The Lodge today
Chiltern is a friendly West End Working Lodge with a bit of Taylor’s mixed in to keep us on our toes and makes for an interesting Lodge of Instruction each fortnight and interesting discussions in the bar afterwards often leading to invitations, support of some charitable activities from weeding premises, hanging pictures and decorations, or simply singing along for Charity.
We’re also well known for holding several social events when there is an opportunity for wives of members to join in. Amongst the most popular are a Summer BBQ, a Founders Lunch, an annual Ladies Night, an LOI supper and a Christmas Carol Concert.
Our history
Chiltern Lodge was consecrated on 10th December 1990 but the birth of this Lodge began when the then Provincial Assistant Grand Master Michael B Jones planted the seed of creating a new Lodge in the Province of Hertfordshire into the brain of W Bro John Bird, the Bar Steward of Halsey Hall Watford in March 1989. After many jovial and lively discussions at the premises about the formation, the name of Chiltern Lodge being representative of the area in which we bordered, was unanimously adopted and the petition by 23 masons was welcomed and approved on 25th June 1999 by Provincial Grand Lodge.
The Provincial Grand Master R.W Bro Godfrey KENT T.D. headed up a magnificent Consecration team of 20 Grand officers from Hertfordshire. The meeting was begun at 3.30pm and it lasted all afternoon until early evening and finished with a memorable festive board.
In the community
Our participation in the last Provincial Festival earned the Platinum Award and we are looking forward to performing equally well in the forthcoming Festival.
Our recent Family Carol Concert performance raised a significant sum for the Association of Friends of Prince Michael of Kent Court.
Chiltern is well known for its support for local charities and since 2022 our list also includes St Francis Hospice, the Watford Peace Hospice (now referred to as the Rennie Grove Peace Hospice). The Medical Detection Dogs, Gurkha Welfare Trust, MCF Ukraine2022 Appeal, New Hope Trust (Watford Homeless support), Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice, PGL Hertfordshire Food Bank Appeal and Watford Social Centre for the Blind.
