The Lodge today

Today, Salisbury Union Lodge is a lively mix of members — students, recent graduates, and men of all ages and backgrounds. This blend gives the Lodge a fresh energy while also ensuring the wisdom and experience of older members is passed on to new generations. Unlike the majority of Lodges we meet in the morning, typically starting at 10am, with the Festive Board completing by 2.30pm.
As a Universities Scheme Lodge, we make it easy for younger members to join, tailoring our approach so that they can balance their Masonic journey with their studies and early careers. We meet regularly for ceremonies and social occasions, always with a spirit of friendship, enjoyment, and encouragement.
Unlike most Lodges, Salisbury Union does not have a single permanent home. Instead, we meet at various Masonic centres around the Province, which gives our members the opportunity to experience the diversity and fellowship of Freemasonry across Hertfordshire.

Our history

Salisbury Union Lodge was formed in January 2012 through the amalgamation of two long-established Lodges: Salisbury Lodge 3228, consecrated in 1907, and Union Lodge 1068, consecrated in Karachi in 1859, which became Union Lodge 767 in 1865. Both had rich traditions and strong identities, but by joining together they created a Lodge with renewed strength and a forward-looking character.

The amalgamation also paved the way for Salisbury Union Lodge to become the designated Universities Scheme Lodge for Hertfordshire, bringing together a proud heritage with a modern, student-focused future. Today, the Lodge continues to honour its past while embracing the opportunities of the present.

In the community

Charity and community service are central to our values. Salisbury Union Lodge supports both local and national charities, often chosen by our members, as well as causes connected to the Universities Scheme.

From fundraising for hospices and youth programmes to contributing to wider Masonic charitable efforts, the Lodge is proud to give back. Our members also actively volunteer their time and skills in the community, putting Freemasonry’s principles of kindness and service into practice.

Testimonials

Some say being Secretary of a Lodge is all paperwork – but at Salisbury Union it’s so much more! The role has kept me on my toes, given me a front-row seat to everything happening in the Lodge, and above all reminded me how lucky I am to be part of such a lively and supportive group of brethren. – W Bro Paul Kelly – Member of 3 years

I’ve heard it said that the Secretary thinks he works hard — but he should try joining the Director of Ceremonies team!” With a full and varied calendar of ceremonies, fresh ideas constantly emerging, and a team of enthusiastic volunteers, Salisbury Union is vibrant, dynamic, and full of energy. Whether you’re keen to get involved with the ceremonial side, assist with the administration, or simply relax and enjoy the company of friends, Salisbury Union has something for everyone. — Tom Golds, Member of 8 years.
