The Lodge today

Verulam Lodge has a diverse membership from a varied range of backgrounds who together cultivate and develop a welcoming and supportive community attitude.

We hold our Lodge meetings five times each year in the months of October, January, March, April and May.

Lodge meetings are held on Saturday afternoons commencing at 4.00pm, which accommodates professional and lifestyles of its members without affecting their commitments during the working week.

Many of the members who have relocated outside of St Albans find the Lodge calendar extremely attractive for attending meetings.

Reciprocal arrangements with other Lodges have created a strong and healthy relationship which is proving a to be a success in expanding the Lodge profile and activities.

The Lodge holds several Social Events each year including a Summer BBQ and Christmas Party which are well supported by Lodge Members, Family and Friends in raising charitable donations through raffles and games.

Verulam Lodge is located at Ashwell House in St Albans and offers a friendly and supportive style of Freemasonry to both members, visitors and prospective members.

Our history

The second World War was ending, and after many months of planning Verulam Lodge became a reality on 27th October 1945.

It was founded with strong links of two other Lodges instrumental in its formation, Crusaders Lodge No.1671 and St Albans Lodge No.2786, who’s members became founder members and were invested as the first Verulam Lodge Officers.

The Lodge Banner which was dedicated on 16th September 1950 is based on a scene of St Albans and includes the letter “V”, which for many years was thought to represent Verulam, but this was not the case.

The Second World War had so recently ended it was decided to include a tribute to the brethren who gave their lives in the defence of their Country, the letter “V” for victory was therefore incorporated into the design.

The accounts for the first year make interesting reading today with the Treasurer reporting a surplus which was spent on many good and charitable causes the following year.

The Lodge has continued to focus its efforts on supporting local and national charitable work and continues to thrive today with 28 members from a wide range of ages and backgrounds.

In the community

Verulam Lodge demonstrates a robust commitment to local community support by regularly donating its contributions to various local charities and actively participating in local organized events.

Lodge members are actively involved with a St Albans scout group and governance in local schools.

Donations are made to many local causes, including schools, homeless charities, scouts, and gardening clubs to name but a few.

While the Lodge historically hasn't actively sponsored local events, it engages in Provincial and other local events, frequently running stalls at events

This commitment extends further to actively supporting the Local Charities, Scouts, Hospice, and Widows in the St Albans locality, despite several members not being local themselves.

Testimonials

W Bro. Christopher James Bloomfield – 79th Worshipful Master – 2023.

I became a Freemason in 2017 and was Initiated in the Verulam Lodge after having been friends with a long-standing member of the Lodge for several years.

My wife and I had often been invited to various social events hosted by the Lodge and I was attracted to join by the members open and welcoming nature.

As a full-time professional, the added advantage was the late Saturday afternoon meeting times which didn’t interfere with my working week commitments.

From day one I have been made to feel fully involved and accepted within the Lodge, and I have been given plenty of opportunities to contribute and progress since joining.

I have also been lucky enough to be a guest at many other Lodge’s events, which has added to the overall pleasure of being a Freemason.

W Bro. Graham John Harris – PPSGD

Having been Initiated into Freemasonry and Verulam Lodge in 1975, one has experienced over the years how Freemasonry has expanded and contracted and reflects in the Lodge Membership of today.

However, I am very pleased to say that my membership of the Lodge has always been enjoyable over the many years.

As far as I’m concerned, the happy and diverse membership within Verulam Lodge, have always associated with one another in the true manner of Freemasonry.

W Bro. Colin Ronald Daniel – PSGD – Charity Steward.

I was initiated into Verulam Lodge on 18th March 2006 and have enjoyed every year of masonry since that date, meeting new friends and finding old friends, as well as the friendship within the Lodge.

I enjoy my work within freemasonry as the Lodge Treasurer and Charity Steward, especially the charitable side which I find most rewarding, helping many different charities, people, and masons alike with support in times of need all over the world as well as in the UK and St. Albans.

You get out more out of Freemasonry than you put in and you feel rewarded for everything you do.
