The Lodge today
The lodge has a long and distinguished history, is proud of the quality of its ceremonial but is unstuffy and embraces change. We have a reputation for giving a warm welcome to our guests and new members. We like to conduct our ceremonies without fuss and the following supper has few speeches and no raffle, allowing those that would like to get home early to leave in plenty of time whilst others can enjoy the Bar and company of the members in a more informal setting. Our membership ranges in ages from 29 to 94.
Our history
The Lodge was formed in November 1829 and until March 1883 was called Bamborough Lodge being the home of the first Master who was a Stationer in that town. The Lodge met in various hostelries until a purpose built hall was occupied in 1874. These were requisitioned for the 1st World War however and from 1916 to the completion of their present premises in 1926, met in a High Street restaurant. Members over the years have included a clutch of Provincial Grand Masters, senior members of the clergy, MPs and a current member of the House of Lords.
The Lodge is the mother lodge of several others that still meet at Watford.
In the community
The Lodge members hold events each year to support local charities and have provided stewards for events such as "fun runs". The Lodge also takes part in the annual Act of Remembrance at the Town Hall. Members provide helpers for fund raising events at a local school.
