Macmillan Cancer Support

Who would have thought that a cup of coffee and a piece of cake would raise £5365 for the Macmillan Cancer Support Charity?

Well, that’s exactly what happened on Saturday 28 September at Halsey Hall, Cheshunt when the centre hosted a Macmillan Big Coffee Morning and Open House event. Inspired to organise the event was Chappie Boswell whose Wife Ruth is living with cancer. Chappie said ‘Ruth has received so much help and support from Macmillan that it only seemed logical to give something back – so we set about organising the Big Coffee Morning. At the time we never realised that we would be able to raise such a massive amount and our thanks go out to everyone who donated.’

Donations came from several individuals and lodges at the Centre including J F Cleeves Preceptory, Theobalds Chapter, Osiris L of I, Goffs Oak Lodge, New Elizabethan Lodge, Wormley St Laurence Lodge, Charles Edward Keyser Lodge, Crossbrook Lodge, Waltham Cross Lodge, and Walnut Tree Lodge who alone raised £2485, and in handing over the Walnut Tree donation Peter Headington said ‘Macmillan have also helped many others like Ruth and myself on our living with cancer journey.’

On the day over £1075 alone was raised from people attending and as the event warmed up there were over 150 people in the brightly decorated hall.

Amongst those attending and donating were the Deputy Mayor Cllr Patsy Spears, the Leader of the Borough of Broxbourne Cllr Mark Mills-Bishop, several other Local Councillors as well as the newly elected Member of Parliament for Broxbourne Lewis Cocking.

As well as enjoying the coffee and cake visitors to the Centre were given the opportunity to have a tour of the listed building and to see the first class facilities available. Bob Barnard – a Board Director – said ‘this has given us the opportunity as Freemasons to show that we are committed to bringing Freemasonry into the community’

Other centres taking part on the day were St Albans and Letchworth.
