Hertfordshire Freemasons Celebrate Growth, Change and Community Spirit at Provincial Meeting 2025
The 2025 Provincial Grand Lodge meeting welcomed another large attendance, marking a day of reflection, gratitude, and optimism for the future of Freemasonry in Hertfordshire.
The Provincial Grand Master began by paying tribute to several retiring Provincial officers, including Dick Knifton, John Norris, Tom Johnston and Tom Tinner, each of whom has given many years of dedicated service. While stepping back from office, they will remain active members of the Province.
The meeting also celebrated the early success of the 2030 Festival, launched last year, which has already inspired widespread support. Early contributions have shown great enthusiasm and some new interesting ways of raising funds for a worthy cause. The Provincial Grand Master expressed gratitude to the Masonic Charitable Foundation for their continued guidance and partnership.

Reflecting on his four years as Provincial Grand Master, he highlighted the value of innovation and inclusivity. From adapting ceremonies to introducing flexible lodge agendas, using WhatsApp groups, and broadening social events, the Province has embraced change to remain relevant to modern Freemasons. Events ranging from beer and gin festivals to cultural celebrations have strengthened family and community ties, reinforcing Hertfordshire’s reputation as “Happy Herts.”
In closing, the Provincial Grand Master reminded members of their role as custodians of Freemasonry, quoting the Ancient Greeks: “A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they will never sit in.”
With unity, vibrancy, and commitment at its heart, Hertfordshire Freemasonry looks ahead to a bright future.
