Fred Charnock

Fred is a very recently retired public schoolmaster. He was initiated into the Old Berkhamstedians Lodge No 4903, his school Lodge, in July 1994 and became Master in February 2001. He has served numerous offices within the Lodge and has been the DC since 2014. He was appointed Provincial Grand Standard Bearer in 2008, Provincial Senior Grand Deacon in 2012 and PPGSuptWks in 2016.

He was exalted into Priory Chapter No 5152 in May 1998, served as Z in both 2008 and 2017 and was appointed Provincial Grand Sword Bearer in 2012. He is also a joining member of Harpenden Chapter No 4314, as a result of his visiting during his year of active office and is a member of 4090 Past Masters Lodge and Past First Principals Chapter.

Fred joined Scholars in Amity Mark Lodge No 1710 in March 2009 and Scholars RAM in November 2009 serving as commander in November 2014. Fred has spent the majority of his working life at Berkhamsted School where he was the coach to the School 1 st XV for many years. He also coached the school athletics and swimming teams. Fred is a qualified mountain leader and ski instructor. He was the Commanding Officer of the School Combined Cadet Force for 25 years and the Duke of Edinburgh’s award team leader for over 30 years.

As a younger man he was a keen rugby player and Ironman Triathlete. These days he is quite happy with a good bottle of red wine being a member of a number of wine societies, and enjoys sampling a variety of new menus and skiing off season without 80-plus teenage students. He has recently invested in a set of golf clubs.

Fred has a son and two daughters, all now grown up. His son is married and lives locally in West Hertfordshire, and has provided Fred with a granddaughter and recently a grandson.
